SHIFTING ATTENTION TO THE NORTH
KOREAN PEOPLE

The North Korean people face the most repressive regime in the world. Human rights and humanitarian crises have gone on for years but traditional international attention on North Korea has focused on issues of high politics; nuclear weapons, international politics, and intrigue into the regime leadership. The North Korean people, as far as they are shown, appear as goose-stepping soldiers or fanatic regime loyalists. This has contributed to an image of North Korea which is over-politicized and locked in an unchanging and hopeless stalemate.

This traditional view does not help move the issue forward, and it does nothing to help the North Korean people. The incredible challenges facing the North Korean people are left ignored, and their resilience and dynamism as they struggle to overcome these challenges and drive change inside the country remains unknown.

We believe that if we can change this picture and focus our attention on the North Korean people, instead of the high politics, we can reveal a story of strength and resilience in the face of extraordinary challenges, and also the hope for change which we already see happening at the level of the people.

Our awareness efforts exist to redefine North Korea so that public perception shifts from the politics to the people, in order to mobilize concerned citizens to support the North Korean people as they realize their potential to drive change inside the country.
